81% of Aussies admit their household is guilty of taking shortcuts when doing the laundry. Whether it’s mixing colours with whites or doing the ‘sniff test’ to check if a garment really needs washing, the majority of us are looking for ways to make the process easier. We can’t blame you!

That’s why we’ve teamed up with professional organising expert, Anita Birges, to help you improve your laundry habits and set yourself up for success without having to scavenge social media for ideas.

Anita says, “Doing the laundry is one of the most hated chores because there are so many steps involved and it can become overwhelming. But if you find a system that works for you, and don’t let it get out of control it will become easier and more manageable.

“If you want to get on top of your washing you need to create healthy habits that work best for you and your lifestyle.”

Here, we share her tips for setting yourself up for laundry success.

1. Display your laundry diagram

Create a diagram that outlines your laundry process and have it on display for the whole family to see. This ensures each member of the household is getting involved – from partners to kids and even your housemates. Once you find a step that everyone enjoys doing, task them with that responsibility over others as they’ll be more likely to help.

2. Sort the right way

Implement a sorting system that goes past just separating lights and darks. I personally never wash my tea towels with my regular clothes because I worry about germs. Luckily though I know that if they do get mixed in, the Westinghouse Plus Hygiene function will stop the germ spread so I don’t have to worry about re-washing anything.

3. Manage your time wisely

Allocate time to do your washing so that it doesn’t get out of control and pile up! If you’re someone that struggles to do this, you may benefit from multiple cycle options like the time-sensitive technology of the new EasyCare laundry range. From the hour of power that washes an entire load in 60 minutes to Fast 15 for urgent items you forgot to wash, you’re covered even with little time.

4. Trial and error is key

Take some time for trial. There is no cookie-cutter approach that will magically make laundry fun, but once you find what works for your family and lifestyle, it sure will become easier. One of the common mistakes Aussies make are not assessing their needs first – what do you need from your laundry routine or what hasn’t worked in the past? Find these and it will help the process!

5. Take advantage of washing baskets (but not too many)

Common mistakes my clients make are having too many washing baskets or not purchasing enough. Most of the time the issue is that they purchase washing baskets and the appliance without considering how many or which one would suit their needs. For me, the number one laundry habit that changed when I became a mother was considering using extra washing baskets! There are a plethora of laundry hampers for dirty washing that you can find online that can help with your sorting system of dirty laundry.
